BRIAN KING: voice, keys,
acoustic guitar
NATHAN COHEN: violin, trumpet
Rooted in folk and blues, and branching out
into neo-cabaret, alternative rock, and eastern-european carnival
music, WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. FOX? could best be described as acoustic
noir. The interplay of Brian King’s “haunting...chameleon-like”
voice (Metronome) and Nathan Cohen’s supple, melodic violin,
creates a common thread throughout a “rich musical tapestry.”
(Equal Pride) Grounded by King’s syncopated rhythms on piano and
guitar, their songs are bustling with memorable characters and images.
You can hear the goldspun tales of a boy who turns into a cartoon, an
undercover jack-o-lantern, the woman who rescues herself from a tower,
or a soulful lament for a melting snowman. With “lyrics which
evoke universal perception and ability to be personal in scope,” (Equal
Pride) and “deftly explore themes of love, sexuality, and
identity” (Bay WIndows) each song describes a transformation or
shift in perspective. In addition to their original material, FOX loves
to put their own twist on favorites from Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash,
and Prince, to jazz standards and traditonal folk tunes. WHAT TIME IS
IT, MR. FOX? has performed at a variety of bars, lofts, clubs and
coffeehouses including, the Kendall Cafe in Cambridge, and are featured
in the monthly cabaret-variety series The RAW BAR at
Jacques Underground in Boston. About the RAW BAR, The Weekly Dig
declares, “Cabaret is the new punk.”
WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. FOX? frequently includes
special guests in their line-up. The lovely Leigh Calabrese
with her singing saw is featured regularly with FOX , as well as
appearances by puppeteers, modern dancers, performance artists, an
accordion player, an African percussionist, and other guest musicians.
Singer/songwriter BRIAN KING’s
vocal influences range from the belting blues of Bessie Smith to the
unbridled expression of Patti Smith. From a soft croon to a searing
roar, “King has a voice that can master all the challenges he
places upon it...sounding comfortable and in control.” (Equal Pride.)
He has performed his songs and monologues in smoky bars, acoustic
fesitvals, cafes and coffeehouses, at venues like The
Lizard Lounge and Zuzu in
Cambridge MA , The Paradise in Boston, with The
Burlesque Revival Association, and in the Boston Pride
Festival on the Commons. King has also composed soundscores for the
acclaimed dance company Kelley Donovan and Dancers.
The violin’s warmth, drama, and versatility has
been utilized by peoples worldwide to channel distinct cultural sounds
and ideas. NATHAN COHEN brings with him the
traditions of southern fiddle, irish jigs, classical and middle eastern
scales. He also stretches the imagination, using the violin to recreate
sounds in nature, such as wind, creaking trees, and moaning birds. With
the addition of jazz trumpet, and his 20 years of classical training
and musical study in Hungary, Ghana, Italy and Turkey, Cohen adds a
worldy sophistication to WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. FOX?.
